The Killing first aired on AMC back in 2011. It’s a remake of a Danish show. Apparently the original was already a great show, but I got hooked to the remake, and I think you should watch it too!
The Killing is not your usual police / crime show. You don’t get to solve one murder per episode. You follow the 2 main characters while they investigate a single murder in each season. Picture it like a novel, where each new season is a chapter.
It’s very dark, it’s slow going, it goes into details, we learn to know each character very well.
Speaking of the characters: they’re not the shiny detectives, waving their guns around and being happy; both Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) are broken cops, with their defaults and fighting their own demons. Both actors would deserve an Emmy for their performance in my opinion.
But for some reason, the show has flown under the radar, and has even been cancelled twice already. That’s most likely because of its slow pace.
Luckily, Netflix picked it up for one last season of 6 episodes, and you can now binge-watch the whole series! I would really recommend it if you like dark series. And who knows, now that Netflix has successfully brought TV Shows to the light (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black), it might help The Killing as well!
I won’t post a trailer because I don’t want to spoil you but here is the main theme song: that should give you a good feel for the series (I love the soundtrack, by the way!).
